Through the Door

… Through the door and into a place quite different from the casual warmth of the bar.

Deep cherry velvet carpets the antique wooden floors of the balcony that surrounds the ballroom; the grand staircase is about five paces from the door, directly before the doorway.

To the left of the staircase is a small, freestanding and solemn sign, pointing to an open doorway further down on the left, reading ‘Mask Room.’ Billy Batson, dressed to the nines in polished black, stands by the banister to give directions and general assistance.

From here you can see the revelry below.

[ooc: fyi - There is an actual Grand Staircase thread to be found here. The banister thread is for those not yet ready to make their entrances. Sorry for my terrible vagueness.]

Mask Room
The room is musty, and lined with neat display shelves in old wood. Each nook has a mask, and a small numbered label. The masks come in a variety of colors and shapes—from the fantastique to the très fantastique; no simple black masks to be found.

There is a ledger by the door with an elegant quill pen to write down your name and the number of the mask you have borrowed.

*Meg's mask is . . . mostly feathers.

Pink feathers.

She looks kind of like a flamingo, except they're usually not so stubby.

Also, it's number 23!*

Re: Mask Room
Draco had heard about the Ball of course, and was dressed properly. Dress wizard robes. Very fine ones indeed. As for a mask? He obtained an elegant and elaborate dragon mask. He made a note in the ledger about it and the number.

Number 72, it was, in fact.

Re: Mask Room
It doesn't take long for Gren to find a mask that seems as if it was made just for him, some sort of cosmic joke, perhaps, or maybe just some sort of cosmic opportunity. He picks up the mask, signs the very fancy ledger, and makes his way toward the grand staircase. He'll put on the mask just before he gets there.

Parker runs his fingers over one before taking it, dark blue and arching up, it covers his whole head, hiding the shaven head. He looks like a bird, something fantastic and foreign.

'56' he writes and leaves.

Re: Mask Room
Patrick may have his mask, but Mary Anne needs to make a stop here.

She takes a moment to study the variety of false faces, before selecting one.

The mask covers the upper half of her face, colored so white (like bone) as to almost glow. It's textured faintly, with delicate raised lines not immediately noticed at first glance.

She slips it on, leaving Mary Anne -- #22 in the ledger.

Arawn came into the room, selecting an appropriate mask.

It had been quite some time since he had gone to a party.

He signed his name with a flourish, noting #43 in the book.

Jill's mask is nothing too ornate and that's the way she had hoped it would be. A silver mask, she wandered over to the ledger and signed her name to it and the mask number.

Number 21

Billy’s hair is slicked back and his tailcoats are long. He is wearing a black tuxedo and a dark but shiny mask over his eyes. His hands are folded behind his back, and he rocks slightly on his heels as he waits for people to arrive.
If you are hesitant to make your grand entrance, you can stand here and talk to a genteel usher while you adjust your mask.

Re: By the Banister
Cywyllog had managed to arrive at the bar early enough this evening, and gather her dress and mask from the bar itself. Since then, she's been primping and preparing in a temporary room.

Now, nervous and excited, she arrives perfectly dressed and masqued, and shyly peers around, still adjusting to seeing with the thing on.

Melpomene hovers by the edge of the stair case, watching and waiting.

She is, admittedly, resplendent, in her black dress and black gloves that go up to the elbow.

Her mask covers only her eyes, and consequently as she bites her lip the entire world can see it, if they care to look over.

Her mask is one of peacock feathers and she is dressed in a blue gown of her own design.

Molly is waiting for Cain to catch up. She isn't sure why he needed to make a side trip, but she approaches the masked usher on the balcony with a smile. She has a keen idea of who it is behind the mask, but she won't spoil the evening by saying so.

Who she is would be painfully obvious to anyone who knows her by her curly hair, no matter how fancy it looks pulled up in front.

She'll wait for Cain here, so that they can make their entrace together.
